Apple introduced iOS 26, a sweeping software update that redefines how iPhones operate and look. Available to developers starting today, the update will reach all users by September.

iPhones will adopt a new aesthetic with "Liquid Glass," a dynamic interface that creates a transparent, fluid-like experience. Icons, menus, and notifications respond to physical movements, introducing realistic reflections and a new "Clear Mode" where users interact with glass-like elements across the screen. This marks the most significant visual shift since iOS 7.

iOS 26 includes Apple's new call screening function. The system handles calls from unknown numbers by prompting callers to state their name and reason. Responses are transcribed and shown on-screen, letting users decide whether to answer. The same filter extends to FaceTime and iMessage.

Screenshots gain utility with Visual Intelligence. This tool scans screen content and suggests relevant actions—like adding an event to the calendar from a captured flyer or finding similar items from a product image. It works system-wide across apps.

The new live translation feature provides real-time transcription and audio translation during FaceTime and regular calls. Messages can be composed in one language and instantly translated for the recipient. This functionality supports all major languages and maintains user privacy with on-device processing.

A dedicated Games app debuts in iOS 26, consolidating all owned titles. It allows direct launching, shows friends' activity, and introduces leaderboards even for solo games. The app supports controllers and syncs progress across Apple devices.

Group chats get functional enhancements, including in-chat polling and custom backgrounds. Typing indicators have been added for greater visibility during conversations.

Maps now track users' travel routines and proactively alert them to disruptions along familiar routes. A "Visited Places" option allows users to view and share their location history, assuming they opt-in.

The Photos interface reverts to a simpler structure with reintroduced Library and Collections tabs. A new feature adds depth to standard images, creating lock screen visuals that respond to movement.

AutoMix blends songs using AI-driven beat matching and pitch adjustments. Meanwhile, Lyrics Translation makes foreign-language tracks more accessible by displaying English subtitles in real-time.

iPhones can now detect hold music and offer to monitor calls until a human answers. Users are alerted once a representative picks up, reducing time wasted on hold.

iOS 26 is available today for registered developers. A public release is scheduled for September.
